Glenn Maxwell’s Horrid Form Continues
Glenn Maxwell’s poor form from the IPL 2024 campaign has carried over into the T20 World Cup. The all-rounder was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the match against Oman on June 6. Maxwell came to bat with Australia in a precarious position after losing their skipper Mitchell Marsh. The onus was on him and David Warner to rebuild the innings. However, Maxwell’s attempt at a cover drive led to his downfall. Despite timing the ball well, Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas produced a stunning catch off Mehran Khan’s bowling, leaving Australian fans stunned and Maxwell distraught.
IPL 2024: A Campaign to Forget
Maxwell had a dismal run during the IPL 2024 campaign for RCB, which even saw him drop himself from the team and take a break. This year’s campaign was Maxwell’s worst performance with the bat in his IPL career. He scored just 52 runs in 10 matches with an average of 5.73. Incidentally, Maxwell was dismissed for a first-ball duck in his final match for RCB during the Eliminator against RR. RCB went on to lose the game, and Maxwell’s wicket was a turning point.
Stoinis and Warner Power Australia’s Recovery
Despite the early struggles and the wickets of Marsh and Maxwell, Australia managed to pull off a recovery act thanks to Marcus Stoinis and David Warner. Both men consolidated the innings until Stoinis launched a counter-attack in the 15th over. After a stroke of luck on the first ball, Stoinis hit four sixes off Mehran’s final over, with Australia scoring 26 runs to set up a strong finish. Warner provided good company, scoring 56 off 51 balls, while Stoinis hit 67 off 36 balls as Australia finished with 164 in their 20 overs. Oman now faces a significant target to chase.
